“October gave a party;
The leaves by hundreds came —
The Chestnuts, Oaks, and Maples,
And leaves of every name.
The Sunshine spread a carpet,
And everything was grand,
Miss Weather led the dancing,
Professor Wind the band.”

~ George Cooper

“Summer ends, and Autumn comes,
and he who would have it otherwise would have
high tide always and a full moon every night;
and thus he would never know the rhythms
that are at the heart of life.”

~Hal Borland

and was treated to the crunch and rustle of leaves with each step I made.
The acoustics of this season are different and all sounds,
no matter how hushed, are as crisp as autumn air.”

  1. Beautiful photos!!!! This is my absolute favorite season!! I only wish it would last as long as winter.

    • Thanks, Diane! I love autumn too–I love everything about it, the cooler, crisp air, the sweet earthy fragrance, the lower angle of the sun and, of course, the beautiful autumnal colour palette. Like you, I wish the season was much longer–our autumns are way too short for my liking. Thanks for stopping by!

  2. Wonderful photo essay! The photos are superb, and I love the quotes. I will not be near northern Autumn weather, so I will miss this year’s great big party (great title btw). Thank you for the visual feast.

    BTW, here is my favorite quote: “A few days ago I walked along the edge of the lake
    and was treated to the crunch and rustle of leaves with each step I made. The acoustics of this season are different and all sounds, no matter how hushed, are as crisp as autumn air.” ~ Eric Sloane

    • Thank you so much, Maria. That’s my favourite quote too. Until I read that quote, I’d never really considered the acoustics of the different seasons, but now I can clearly identify the distinctive and varied qualities of tones and sounds of each of our seasons. Thanks again for your comment and for stopping by.

  3. Hello Jeannie!
    You’ve captured wonderful moments of my favourite season. So pretty!
    I also wish autumn would last longer, I love how all the leaves turn colour, and the slight melancholy feel ;) As always, thanks for sharing!

    • Hello Takami! Autumn truly is a beautiful season wherever and whenever it occurs all over this planet. I find the autumnal colours as exhilarating as the colours of spring and summer. And I know what you mean about the different energy of autumn–for me, it’s a welcomed slowing or winding down of energy, turning more inward a bit. This is when I start to think about my winter reading list and I spend more writing in my journals. Thanks again for your lovely comment, Takami. :)) It’s always a delight to have you stop by. Wishing you and your husband a very happy day! :))

  4. Jeannie, your photos captured Autumn for sure. I’ve been reminded over the last few days of many fun days, hiking through the bush & crunching in the leaves – always with birds calling to us. Dad & I always loved camping in the fall – it’s a special time.

    • Hi Mom! I too have been fondly remembering the beautiful autumn trips you both enjoyed together. It really is a wonderful time to camp. Autumn is so peaceful and beautiful and it’s such a lovely thing to have so many happy times associated with it. Thank you so much for visiting and for your comment. Wishing you a very happy and beautiful autumn day! :)) xx

  5. A wonderfully colourful series Jeannie..I hope autumn lasts till March! Well I`ll dream it could happen :)) We are still trying to get harvest done…I guess we will get there sooner or later! Take care my friend..

  6. Such a beautiful series of nature ~ blissful. From the first shot onwards it was a treat (shooting into the light can create such special shots, so well done). I’m missing autumn in the States, and this post of yours brought it right to my doorstep. Thank you :-)

    • Thank you for your kind comment, Randall. You’d think one would get used to autumn, but every year the colours dazzle and amaze me as if it was the first time I ever saw them. I suppose that’s the beauty of having changing seasons–change keeps things feeling fresh. There is less chance to take things for granted. I hope you get an opportunity to get back to the States to enjoy a bit of autumn there.

  7. Jeannie, a beautiful blend of words and wonderfully composed photographs. Your eye for colors, patterns and composition are so superific! You are a natural artist!

  8. The photos are magnificent, as are the selected poems and sentiments. A thoroughly enjoyable visit, well deserving of the follow with which I rewarded it. Looking forward to many return trips. Thank-you for all your wonderful efforts.
