Crazy Love: A Poem for Bear

LoveFlare-2

Crazy Love

Years and years ago,
when we first met, so young and soaring high
on possibility, music and crazy love—
you showed up somewhere, purely unexpected,
and I first understood “my heart leaps up”.

And still today, expected or not,
whenever I catch a glimpse of you,
with even the very thought of you,
my heart leaps up and up—
still crazy in love,
still crazy in love,
still crazy in love—
with you.

For my Sweet Bear:

Thank you for reading to me.  Thank you for singing with me. Thank you for dancing with me. Thank you for a lifetime of love.

I love you beyond description.

The Danbo Brothers’ Zest for Life

True happiness comes from the joy of deeds well done,
the zest of creating things new.

~ Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

If life gives you lemons…

I’ve been enjoying the company of the Danbo Brothers immensely since they returned from their last (rather unexpected) lengthy winter sojourn. They never fail to surprise and delight me. Last night, just before I went to bed, I found them sitting together on the couch, happily watching their favourite movie, Ratatouille, on my iPad.

A Jar of Security: A Poem

Security

A Jar of Security

I tried to contain love once,
catching some
and putting it in a jar
so I could be sure to see it
any time I pleased.

I punched holes in the top,
carefully arranged fresh leaves
and small pots of honey water.

It fluttered around beautifully
until the morning I awoke
to find its limp, lifeless
shadow at the bottom of the jar,
a note carefully pinned on:

Sorry,
I couldn’t stay.
I left what I could.

I love you.

Love is…

Love is a funny thing. More often than not, the popular notion of love is confused with romance or other feelings, like infatuation, lust, insecurity or even jealousy and possessiveness. When I was very young, I learned the hard way that what I thought was love on my part, wasn’t. But isn’t that what those early relationships are for? To put yourself out there and learn from your own life experience what makes the stuff of good relationships?

Peter and Lillian Are Back!

Peter and Lillian

Peter and Lillian Rabbit

For me, spring officially kicks off with the arrival of Peter and Lillian, two fanciful rabbits who have been turning up here each spring for eons.

Evidence of their existence came many moons ago. It was Easter break and I was in my second year of undergrad studies, buried up to my eyeballs in textbooks and study notes, frantically trying to prepare for final exams. I had a heavier course load than my friends, who had all taken off to go somewhere fun, while poor, poor me was stuck in the study hall. Continue reading

Summer Green Peas: Happy Thoughts

DSC_0593_4436_5AE-EditFresh Green Pea Season

It’s Pea Season! And we’ve been hauling huge bags of them home from the farmers market every week. My favourite way to enjoy summer peas is to simply fill a large bowl with fresh, cold, crunchy pea pods, shell one, pop the succulent little morsels straight into my mouth, savour them thoroughly, and gluttonously carry on until the whole bowl is empty. Mmmmm… they are such a delicious summer treat.
