Beguiled by the Dance of Sunlight and Grass

“There is not one blade of grass,
there is no color in this world that is not intended to make us rejoice.”

~ John Calvin

The Green Green Grass of Home

Being a prairie girl at heart, I love tall wild grass. I love the way whole fields of it sway to and fro on windy days like waves on the ocean. I love how brilliantly green it starts out and how the summer sun slowly fades it into beautiful hues of yellow and gold; I love the diversity of different and beautiful seed heads. But mostly, I love the way grass dances with sunlight.
Whenever I go for a walk in the meadows and natural grasslands, I’m totally beguiled by the beauty and artistry of grass. Nothing feels more perfect on a warm summer’s day than lying on my back in a grassy meadow, listening to the wind play its music through the grassy fields and watching sunbeams dance with the beautiful bobbing blossom heads of the grass.

“I am in love with the green earth.”

~ Charles Lamb

“The moment one gives close attention to any thing, even a blade of grass,
it becomes a mysterious, awesome, indescribably magnificent world in itself.”

~ Henry Miller

“Lie down and listen to the crabgrass grow.”

– Marya Mannes

“Rest is not idleness,
and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day,
listening to the murmur of the water,
or watching the clouds float across the sky,
is by no means a waste of time.”

~ John Lubbock

  1. Beautiful sun dancing on the grass,
all more beautiful than each other …
    Wonderful pictures, Jeannie.
I wish you a good Tuesday.

  2. I so very much enjoyed your dedication to the prairie grasses here, Jeannie. I, too, have a warm fondness for prairies, and the vast and quiet beauty that they express. I enjoyed all the quotes and photos. I caught myself wondering if I listened to crabgrass grow, would it be crabby? lol. :D :D

    • Hello Jet! Thanks so much for your lovely (and funny) comment. I know how much you love all aspects of nature so I’m not at all surprised to hear that you too foster a warm fondness for the prairies. Crabgrass—it IS a strange name for a grass, isn’t it? I hope it’s a misnomer as I can’t imagine a grass happily growing under the big blue skies ever being crabby. Thanks so much for stopping by. Wishing you and yours a very happy week ahead! :))

  3. Love images of ornamental grasses Jeannie. and the ones you have posted are just stunning with beautiful tones, lighting & bokehs. What type of camera to you use? Happy Thanksgiving my friend ~

    • Thank you so much for your kind words, Dianne. I just got a new camera this summer, a Nikon D7200. The top shot was taken with my old Nikon D80 and the rest of the shots were taken with my new D7200, which I can’t say enough good things about. It’s an upgrade for me and I’m still learning about all its features. Wishing you a very happy Thanksgiving too, Dianne! ~ Jeannie :))

  4. Beguiled… One of my most favorite words used in US History. Lincoln himself is never documented as using the word so his letter writer (I forgot his name) used it in that famous letter to a dead soldier’s mother. In fact, the letter writer used it several times in other letters.

Your macro shots are so, so sharp and so well composed, Jeannie! I am soooo jealous!!!
