Everbearing Optimism: Planting Strawberries

Potted Strawberries

This is my third season growing strawberries in pots in my balcony garden here in Calgary, Alberta. The strawberry plants are a wonderful addition to my little garden, with their perfect white blossoms and beautiful lush green foliage. And, of course, we get to enjoy their sweet, succulent little fruits. If you love fresh strawberries and have a small south-facing space in your yard or on your apartment balcony, do try planting a few strawberries in pots. They are easy to grow, fun to harvest and delicious to eat. One bonus of growing strawberries on a highrise balcony is that the birds and squirrels cannot pilfer the ripe berries before you do!

“Optimism works in conjunction with your life energy,
strengthening your roots and keeping you grounded,
stimulating the growth of new shoots and the development
of new branches that form your life,
energizing the creation that is you.”

~ Dana Lightman

My First Strawberry Season

I was thrilled the first year I added strawberries to my little balcony garden and eagerly watched as they began to produce their first berries. I had high hopes of triumphantly taking a beautiful shot of the first ripe strawberries and posting it on Flickr. Alas, while my plants bore fruit, the berries were sadly misshapen and, for reasons unknown to me, resembled Mutant Teenage Ninja Turtles. Happily, though, the berries were very tasty, packed with intense strawberry flavour, and they provided us with many jokes and much laughter as we enjoyed the small, funny looking handful I picked for breakfast each morning. I wish I had taken photos and posted them on Flickr—it would have been the source of many a good laugh!

The Second Season

My second summer planting strawberries, I had much more success with the berries growing into more normal looking strawberry shapes. But, every now and then, some of the berries were less than perfect, and still showed hints of the Teenage Ninja Turtle shape.

and helps us think creatively past problems.”

This Year: Ever Hopeful

In this, my third strawberry season, I’m very optimistic that my plants will more consistently bear some properly shaped strawberries. I’ve discovered that I may have been over-watering them. And this year I have increased my crop by investing in a beautiful strawberry pot, which I’m hoping will yield an even more bountiful harvest. But, whatever the outcome, I have discovered that potted strawberries are easy and fun to grow, yielding much pleasure. And, no matter what shape they take, they are always a tasty and delicious treat!

This year’s new strawberry pot.

  1. If all goes well, you will have a nice strawberry harvesting …
My home, they begin to blush.
    Great photos Jeannie.
I wish you a wonderful week.

    • Hello Herve! Here in Calgary, spring starts so much later than it does in France. The strawberries I am growing won’t begin to blush for another month! You are very fortunate to have such early strawberries. Enjoy! Wishing you a great week ahead! :)))

  2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles-shaped strawberries! Wow cool! :)
The strawberry blossoms are beautiful – it’s the first time I see them. Like you, I keep optimistic and hope that it will be another ‘fruitful’ season. Thank you for brightening my morning♡

    • Hello Takami! Yes, ha…ha… that first crop of strawberries did look very strange indeed. Luckily, their very odd shapes didn’t affect their delicious flavour. Thank you for stopping by. I wish for you a season of unexpected delightful surprises and all manner of good things blossoming in your life! :))

    • Thank you, Dianne! Strawberries do extremely well in pots so they are perfect for my container garden. My first crop of strawberries are just starting to blush! I should be picking them within the week. :))

  4. Thank you for sharing your experience with growing strawberries. I also want to harvest some in my garden this year. I got many ideas about how to recreate my garden. Greetings
