The Wayward Brothers

IMG_6794Life with the Danbos

My relationship with the Danbo Brothers has never been paternalistic. It was clear from the moment these two little guys came to live with us that, although we all enjoy each others’ company immensely, the Danbo Brothers neither wanted nor needed a caretaker. They immediately established their keen requirement for total freedom and complete independence. The Danbo Brothers have always come and gone of their own accord and, right from the get-go, they demonstrated that their diminutive size did not in any way limit them. I fully understood their need for independence and we have lived together in perfect harmony ever since.

I never quite know when the Danbo Brothers will disappear or, for that matter, pop up again. It’s a quality I rather enjoy about them, as it keeps life interesting around here. I like the fact that I never know what adventures they might be up to next. That being said, after I dispatched the Danbo Brothers on an emergency mission to replenish my dwindling chocolate supplies (see my previous post, Cold Snap Dwindles Essential Fuel Supplies), I fully expected them to return tout de suite bearing lots of chocolate.

But the Danbo Brothers did not return tout de suite. They are, in fact, still out there somewhere, roaming about, who knows where, undoubtedly having fun. And although this time around, they’ve been away for longer than usual, I’m not worried about them. Surprisingly, given the fact that I eventually had to risk life and limb to venture out into the frigid cold myself to replenish my dangerously low chocolate supplies (all suited up in my Arctic wear and looking like the Michelin Tire Man to brave the elements), I’m not even a little miffed. I’m simply exceedingly curious as to where the brothers could possibly be. And what on earth could they be up to this time?

Thumbing through the Danbo Brothers’ Photo Album.

Each day, I wonder when the boys will turn up again. Every now and again, I pull out the Danbo Brothers’ photo album to thumb through a few pages. Or I catch myself looking out the window, to see if I can spot them trundling up the block together. If I awaken in the night, I strain to listen, wondering if I might hear their little whispering voices. I also find myself looking at the special little gift they gave me, a quaint, old-fashioned sort of gift, a necklace with a gold locket bearing their photo inside. When they first gave it to me, I was charmed and thought it rather sweet but I set it in my jewellery box. Now, I find myself pulling it out, opening the hinged door, gazing fondly at their sweet, happy faces and smiling to myself.

  1. Oh, Jeannie! It’s so GOOD to have you back again! I was worried about you! And, of course, I know the Danbo Brothers can take good care of themselves — they were fashioned by a caring, expert hand. I love this post, love the photo album. Thank you for returning! Welcome back, :)

    • Hello Debra! Thank you for your warm welcome back and your kind comments. I’m glad you enjoy reading about the Danbo Brothers and their little adventures. I’ve always had an active, playful imagination and I really enjoy writing these little stories. Thanks again for your warm welcome! :))

  2. Hello dear Jeannie,
It’s lovely to see a new post from you. I have also been wondering what the Danbo Brothers have been up to, how they’ve been coming along. While I miss them, I know that they – like us – sometimes need time to be on their own, and simply do their own thing. I believe that when time is right, they’ll pay you a visit again, and you can all enjoy chocolate together, swap stories over a warm meal. Thank you for sharing, this post brought a tear to my eye.

    • Oh, I’m so glad you enjoy the Danbo Brothers’ adventures, Takami! Writing these little stories makes me happy. These two guys really have taken on a life of their own since coming to stay with us! :))

  3. Lovely to see you back Jeannie, what on earth are they up to this time, some little adventure for sure, maybe they have gone visiting somewhere a little warmer and will return in the spring. The animated album is very clever, me likes. I hope your chocolate supply keeps you going till their return.

    Kindest Regards

    • Hello Mark! It’s always a pleasure to have you drop by here. And yes, ha, ha…although it was touch and go for a while there, I managed to lay in a good amount of high quality dark chocolate which, happily, should take me well into the spring. ~ Jeannie :))

  4. Wonderful Jeannie…I bet those two are somewhere warm and sunny enjoying themselves and I must admit I’m quite envious of them…:-) Have a great week my friend..

  5. Wow, that was very, very impressive…love the album and what a great relationship you have with the Danbo brothers, I could learn a lot from them :-) They are a creative duo, and seem to find themselves in situations that are simply picturesque…well done!

  6. Another wonderful bit of writing indeed, Jeannie… So much fluidity! Is that a word? And there is no limit to your artistry… Indeed, I hope you gave the Danbo Brothers a good spray of water repellent before they left!
