Chocolate-Covered Marzipan Balls: Another Easy and Delicious Gift Idea

Chocolate-Covered Marzipan Balls

Chocolate and marzipan pair beautifully together. And nothing could be easier than rolling marzipan balls and dipping them into the chocolate of your choice. Make some of these, throw a few into a festive bag along with some Homemade Chocolate Truffles (see my previous post) and you’ve got a great gift.

Chocolate-Covered Marzipan Balls Recipe


  • 4 oz (give or take) high quality chocolate of your choice—bittersweet, semi-sweet, milk or white chocolate. I don’t really have specific amounts for this—I just eyeball everything, depending on how many I want to make.
  • Marzipan (either commercially prepared or homemade marzipan)


Temper your chocolate (see my Chocolate Lollipop post for instructions on tempering chocolate). Rolls bits of marzipan into balls about the size of a chocolate truffle. Dip each ball into the tempered chocolate. I use a spoon and then remove the ball from the spoon with a cocktail fork or fondue fork. Make sure to allow all excess chocolate to drip off (this prevents a big puddle of chocolate from forming under your ball and creating a “foot”). Place each dipped ball onto parchment paper. Add garnish or decorations, such as chopped nuts or candied orange peel, before chocolate sets. Refrigerate until the chocolate has set. Once the chocolate has set, cover and store in the refrigerator.


  • Dark Chocolate Marzipan with Kirsch-Soaked Cherries: Soak some dried cherries in Kirsch. Once the cherries are re-hydrated, pat dry with a paper towel. Shape marzipan into a flat disc, wrap it around the dried cherry to form a ball and dip it in chocolate.
  • White Chocolate Marzipan with Candied Orange Peel: Knead a few drops of orange blossom water and bits of candied orange peel into the marzipan before rolling into balls. Dip into white chocolate and sprinkle with toasted chopped pistachios.

  3. Jeannie, these chocolate-covered marzipan balls look so delicious! My husband absolutely loves marzipan — and I do, too, but he REALLY loves it! — so maybe one of us and pull out the utensils and try to make a batch. I’m also going to share your recipe with my sister-in-law who loves to make candy, but she can’t eat dark or milk chocolate (only white; the others give her migraines) so this candy made with the white chocolate would be perfect for her. Gosh, I’m really hungry just looking at your photos! And it’s almost my bedtime! :)

    • Hello Debra! If you love marzipan, these really are delicious (and so simple to make). I usually make my own marzipan, but there is some good quality commercially prepared marzipan available, which makes it even easier. There’s no baking involved (the chocolate tempering is easily done in the microwave) and you can get as creative as you want to. And I’m glad you mentioned that about white chocolate, because it really is a great alternative for those who can’t handle regular chocolate! Enjoy your day! :))

    I’ll admit to not being too keen on marzipan (although my husband loves it), but you make these look delightfully luscious. I’ve said it before, but will say it again, the lucky recipients are very blessed indeed :) And I’m sure they appreciate it too ;)
