Poem: The Special One

Goodnight Bunny

The Special One

I pulled up the covers
and had just turned out the light
when she spoke,
her voice soft and sweet:

“Am I special?”

I sat back down on her bed,
raked my fingers gently through her soft, silky curls
and kissed her little forehead:

“You are unique,
I said,
“one of a kind;
distinctively beautiful:

In the entire Universe,
there is no other,
nor will there ever be anyone,
exactly like you.

And that, sweet girl,
makes you very, very

She pondered that silently—
I could feel her stretch,
and reach and extend beyond
to finally grasp it—
her joy spilling over us both
the exact moment
she got there:

“We are all special!”

  1. A wonderful poem that reminds us how the innocent, the child, is the one who extrapolates that if “she” is special, then “we all are.” If only all adults could be so wise! Love the artwork, too. The detail is amazing; I’m not an artist, so I can’t quite figure out how you get the reflection off the bunny, but it’s great!

    • Thank you very much for your thoughtful comment, Debra. I think it would serve us all well to remember that each one of us is a miracle; that we are such wondrous creations. And you ARE an artist! I absolutely LOVE your illustrations—they contain a wonderful spirit of playfulness and bring me a lot of joy. I love saturated colour—it always causes my pleasure neurons to fire. :))

      • Well, thank you, Jeannie! “Saturated colour” — I didn’t even know that’s what I was doing/using! LOL My parents were both artists, but I think I got the “writing” gene from a great-aunt. But it’s sweet of you to say I’m an artist, :) My art can’t hold a candle to yours, but that’s okay because I sure do enjoy looking at your creations and studying them — and just getting enjoyment from them, too! And, BTW, you are definitely a poet! :)

  2. Oh, this is so tender and sweet! And the important message, reminding us how we are all special and unique. I love your illustration of the Goodnight Bunny. Thank you for brightening my rainy Morning :)))

    • Thank you for your kind words, Takami! If my poem makes just one person feel their own unique beauty and the wonder that they are, then my intention for the poem will have been met. It may be raining in Tokyo, but I know there is a lot of warmth and sunshine in your heart! :))

  3. What a beautiful poem Jeannie. It makes me think of our granddaughter who you know we lost on August 1st of this year and what a special young lady she was.I am so glad that she knew how special we thought she was.

    • Dianne! What a lovely surprise to see you here! :)) And thank you for your kind words. I’m not surprised to hear that your granddaughter knew how well loved she was. And how precious she was, not only to you, but to the world. I have no doubt that you and your family made certain of that—and there is comfort in knowing that.
